Why Do Girls Engage in CD?

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter explores why an increasing number of girls are willingly selling sex through compensated dating (CD). In addition to materialistic desires, the following are all factors that create an environment that encourages girls to practise CD: technological evolution, which makes it easier to enter into the sex market; the prevalence of online sexual activities, which deconstructs the structural constraints regarding sexuality; the fragmentation of modern society, which reduces institutional control and increases individual freedom; the transformation of intimacy, which leads to more fragile and fluid modern relationships; and the contemporary practice of plastic sexuality, which no longer confines sex to marriage. The chapter suggests that a new female biography has predisposed many young girls to CD, and points out that although the emancipation of female sexuality has given new opportunities and freedom to women, it also creates new problems for them.
