Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) has swiftly altered the digital landscape, creating a network of connected systems that link together between the physical and online environment. However, this integration comes at a cost, introducing significant security and privacy challenges. Focusing on these aspects of security and privacy, the chapter presents an exhaustive examination of these challenges, focusing on the vulnerabilities, attack vectors, and security aspects within IoT systems. It delves into the fundamental architecture of IoT systems, highlighting the various areas and their associated vulnerabilities. The chapter emphasizes the seriousness of the vulnerabilities in the perception layer's physical interactions and the application layer's data processing vulnerabilities. The study has several implications including its managerial and practical applications as it highlights how the vulnerabilities lead to significant threats and major attacks. The chapter also critically examines the strategies that have been adopted for enhancing the security of the IoT, the use of encryption, secure access systems, and intrusion detection. This chapter will, therefore, seek to explore what areas are likely to pose a security concern and what measures are likely to be effective in alleviating issues related to IoT devices and networks.
