Virtual reality-enhanced learning for ESL/EFL presentation skills: effects on holistic learning outcomes

Research output: Contribution to journal › Article › peer-review

Abstract

This study investigates the potential of a virtual reality (VR) online learning platform, specifically Chill Talk, to enhance presentation skills. Grounded in constructivism, Chill Talk integrated comprehensive learning materials, videos, a forum, and immersive VR presentation practice. It enabled learners to engage in immersive environments and deliver presentations using their own slides, smartphones, and affordable VR devices. Employing a holistic assessment approach, the study examined students' learning outcomes across academic achievement, cognitive development, and affective growth. The participants, ESL/EFL university students in Hong Kong, used Chill Talk for self-directed English presentation learning and practice over two months. Pre- and post-study surveys were conducted to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. The results revealed that Chill Talk significantly enhanced all perceived learning outcomes. Academically, participants demonstrated improved language proficiency, presentation skills, and reduced public-speaking anxiety. Moreover, it facilitated cognitive and affective development, including metacognitive ability, critical thinking, motivation, engagement, and confidence.
