Abstract
Uterine artery resistivity index (RI) and pulsatility index (PI) have been used to predict pregnancies at risk of intrauterine growth retardation. We were intended to discover whether these could be affected by maternal food intake and diurnal variation. Twenty uncomplicated pregnancies between 18 and 20 weeks gestation had RI and PI of both uterine arteries measure: 1) fasting in the morning, 2) 30 minutes interval after breakfast, 3) immediately before lunch, 4) 30 minutes intervals after lunch to 5:00 pm. Two types of variation were discovered. One is related to the meal times and one is related to the time of day. If RI and PI are to be used in obstetric screening, the importance of the effects of meals and time of scanning have to be allowed for.
