Abstract

Several design and emotion studies investigated the influence of emotion in decision making and overall design process. However, numerous designers still experience problems relating to intrinsic factors in their design processes. Although certain designers have adopted rational and cognitive design management approaches, they still encounter difficulties in making complex decisions in the design process. Previous studies have determined that emotions can enhance a designer's ability to make decisions and optimise their design processes. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to investigate how emotion affects decision making and influences design processes. This study adopted two main approaches: quantitative and qualitative research. The research team in this empirical study investigated whether designers understand the relationships among design and emotion and how emotion influences them in adopting differing research and analytical methods. The results confirm the importance of emotion in the design process.
