Understanding national identity cultivation: Perspectives of Hong Kong kindergarten educators through a survey-based inquiry

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaperpeer-review

Abstract

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government has recently implemented policies to promote national identity education in kindergartens. However, limited research has explored the views and approaches of kindergarten educators on this issue. This study investigates Hong Kong kindergarten educators’ attitudes, values, and practices in nurturing national identity development among their students. An interactive online questionnaire was developed based on the findings of a multiple-case study involving educators from eight purposively selected kindergartens. The questionnaire explores educators’ conceptualisations of national identity, beliefs about the role of early childhood education, and specific strategies employed in their settings. From April to May 2024, the questionnaire will be administered to a diverse sample of kindergarten educators across Hong Kong, representing various kindergarten types, curricula, and student demographics. This presentation will share initial results highlighting the convergences and divergences among Hong Kong’s kindergarten educators regarding national identity cultivation. By addressing this understudied area, the research aims to inform inclusive practices and policies that respect Hong Kong’s diversity while promoting social cohesion and national affiliation. The study is funded by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (UGC/FDS16/H17/21).
