Abstract
This article makes a first attempt to explore an empirical analysis of the intricate usage of the definite article preceding multi-word organization names. By making use of logistic regression, the present corpus-based study aims to construct a statistical model in an attempt to discern the grammatical factors that are hypothesized as influencing the choice between the use and omission of the definite article preceding organization names in relation to the principle of parsimony. This multivariate statistical technique is also able to assess the importance of each grammatical factor in the final model in relation to the notion of gradience. By making precise predictive statements about a non-discrete linguistic category, this investigation sheds light on the theory of linguistic performance rather than that of linguistic competence.
