The Brothers—Part I: Men Who Buy Compensated Dating

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter explores the characteristics of compensated dating (CD) clients, namely Brothers, and their motivations to engage in commercial sex. It begins by reviewing the existing literature that has attempted to identify clients from non-clients based on certain personal, social, and economic characteristics. It then compares and contrasts these results with the characteristics of Brothers to discern their similarities and differences. It concludes that Brothers are more likely to be in the middle to higher socio-economic class, that their age range tends to fall between 18 and 44, and that they are generally younger than clients of traditional forms of prostitution. Following on from this deduction of the demographic characteristics of Brothers, the chapter explores their motivation to seek CD in light of the most commonly identified male client’s reasons for prostituting.
