Abstract

Existing antenna array-based localization methods rely on fixed-position arrays and strict field assumptions (near-field or far-field), limiting their effectiveness in complex scenarios. This paper introduces a scalable fluid antenna system (SFAS) that dynamically adjusts its aperture for different localization tasks. We develop a two-stage strategy based on exact spatial geometry: a compressed aperture for initial direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation, and an expanded aperture for enhanced DOA and range estimation. This approach eliminates the need for source classification and achieves high accuracy without field-specific assumptions or approximations. Simulations demonstrate superior performance in localization accuracy and robustness across mixed-field environments.
