Abstract

This paper provides a comprehensive review of smart learning research and practice published in the past decade (2010-2019). The review includes a total of 85 articles collected from three publication databases, namely Web of Science, Scopus and ProQuest. It covers the patterns of publications on smart learning, the research topics and research purposes, as well as the types of devices/tools and features involved in smart learning practices. Over the period analysed, the results showed an increasing number of publications from a wider range of countries/regions and sources. More than half of the research topics belonged to the categories of smart learning environment and smart classroom. The research purposes most frequently addressed the design and evaluation of smart learning systems/services. The smart learning practices commonly involved the use of mobile and smart devices (e.g. smartphones, tablet computers and sensors), and the features of collaboration, personalisation and intelligence. Based on the results, potential areas for future work are also discussed.
