Abstract

Poliomyelitis is a highly infectious viral disease that mainly affects young children. It spreads through contaminated food and water. The virus may attack the central nervous system and cause paralysis and subsequent deformity. The first known description of poliomyelitis was given by Underwood in 1789 and it was not until 1855 that Duchenne described the pathological process in poliomyelitis involving the anterior horn cells of the spinal cord.
