Abstract

After nearly 15 years of negotiations, China was formally invited in 2001 to join the World Trade Organization (WTO). This capped an historic year that included the award of the 2008 Olympics to Beijing and the hosting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Shanghai. Accession to the WTO offers many
opportunities for China and multinational firms, as well as numerous challenges.
