Abstract

The size of electrodes in bio-chemical sensors has shrunk quickly in recent years. The high impedance from polarizable microelectrodes brings new challenges to the sensor design. On the other hand, non-polarizable electrodes, such as Ag/AgCl electrodes, could have lower impedance at the low bio-signal frequency band. Thin-film Ag/AgCl electrode is commonly used as reference electrode. In this work, the electrochemical processes governing the impedance profile of thin film Ag/AgCl microelectrodes are systematically studied. New models are established for circuit parameters of thin film Ag/AgCl microelectrodes based on the new findings. The models are verified extensively with impedance measurements.
