Ensuring Drinking Water Quality in Hong Kong

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceeding › Conference contribution › peer-review

Abstract

In Hong Kong, the delivery of water to buildings raises concerns about contamination within internal plumbing systems. While the Hong Kong Water Supplies Department (HKWSD) enforces the Hong Kong Drinking Water Standards (HKDWS), oversight diminishes within buildings. Aging infrastructure and climate change vulnerabilities compound water quality challenges. Traditional testing methods are costly and time-consuming, providing limited data snapshots. Real-time monitoring systems offer a promising solution, promptly detecting contaminants. This research advocates for the adoption of Real-time monitoring systems in Hong Kong buildings to enhance water safety, regulatory compliance, and public health outcomes. By providing immediate alerts to water quality issues, these systems enable quicker resolution and potentially prevent health hazards. Implementing Real-time monitoring systems represents a proactive measure to safeguard water quality, adapt to climate change impacts, and enhance the resilience of Hong Kong's water infrastructure.
