Abstract

Human bodies are not designed for a sedentary lifestyle. However, it is a noticeable phenomenon in recent years that office workers are required to sit on chairs for more than 8 hours per day. In addition, improper sitting posture exacerbates the spinal and backbone, creating occupational safety hazards like back and neck pain. It was proved that having a good sitting posture is vital to maintaining spinal, bones and muscles' health system. Therefore, by implementing an Internet-of-Things (IoT) Smart Chair System, sitting posture was monitored and adjusted by force-sensing resistors (FSR) and actuators. By correcting users' center of mass instantly, a good sitting posture habits are developed in the long term. Thus, the IoT Smart Chair help maintaining and preventing spinal problems. This paper reveals the feasibility of maintaining spinal health by constructing an IoT Smart Chair with a sensible cost of less than USD 250.
