Abstract

Cyber-Physical System (CPS) is an integrated platform to provide real time communication between manufacturing engineers, computational software and physical hardware for (i) enhancing the decision making process, (ii) increasing productivity and (iii) utilizing the production time and material resources in the production process. CPS applications in total productive maintenance (TPM) were proposed by some researchers that aim to monitor the machinery performance for improving the overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) of the manufacturing industry. Although product safety is one of the critical competences in the comprehensive market competition, it is seldom documented in CPS. This paper sought to discuss the opportunities of applying CPS in the new product development process in pre-design and post-design stages for improving product safety in toy products proactively. An overview of CPS applications, consumer product safety and integration methods in manufacturing industry will be presented in this paper. Opportunities in applying CPSC data with CPS to product safety will also be addressed.
