Abstract
A serial thinning algorithm by contour generation using chain codes can be customised to resemble other parallel or sequential thinning algorithms. In this way the shaping of the skeleton can be adapted to meet the requirements for a particular application and at the same time benefit from the speed associated with a serial algorithm implemented on a serial computer.
