Abstract

There is a significant number of candidates in Hong Kong awaiting their driving tests every year, yet the pass rates are notably low due to inadequate training time and high costs of practical training. To mitigate these issues, this paper presents the design of a cost-effective, immersive, and realistic driving test simulator. The simulator employs consumer-grade hardware, including a virtual reality (VR) headset and a driving wheelset, to familiarize users with the procedures and stress of an actual driving test, thereby enhancing their driving skills and increasing their likelihood of passing. The simulator features an authentic map for one of the driving test routes and is designed to mirror the actual exam procedure, providing a simulated environment for users to hone their driving skills and enhance their performance. We expect that the proposed approach will help train users' higher-order driving skills and also provide valuable insights to education practitioners on integrating VR into practical skill training beyond driving.
