A time division duplex system with antenna arrays for both the uplink and the downlink

Abstract

In this paper, we examine the performance of a time division duplex (TDD) system with antenna arrays for both the uplink and the downlink. In this system, users can adapatively adjust their gain vectors (in transmitters) and weight vectors (in receivers) to achieve target SNR's with the minimum amount of power for the uplink transmission. We propose an algorithm for the adaptation. Simulations show that users can achieve their targets with a small number of iterations. We also find that if a TDD system can support K simultaneous users with target SNR's γk in the uplink, with sufficient power, it can support the same users in the downlink with the same target SNR's γk.
