Abstract

Oral presentation is one of the most desirable soft-skills of university graduates. One proven way to train oral presentation is to put students through authentic presentation sessions and facilitate them to improve through feedbacks from their peers, teachers, and self-observation. However, such authentic situations with real audience and genuine high-stakes objectives are not frequent due to the difficulty to holding one. This paper presents a self-regulated mobile learning approach of training oral presentation. A mobile application with feed-back functions will allow presenters to practice certain elements of effective presentation that do not require authentic training. A mobile application called PresentMate was developed for the evaluation of this approach. The mobile application can provide instant or delayed feedback on timing, body motion, and voice level to the user. The user can practice at any place and at any time to improve presentation skills based on consideration of the feedback. A preliminary survey indicated that this approach is viable and a number of suggestions on enhancing the design are given in the paper.
