The references of reflexives have been discussed intensively in linguistic studies, among which the Binding Principle A proposed by Chomsky (1981) provides canonical interpretation for the referential rule of English reflexives. However, to some extent, the Binding Principle A does not match up with the actual uses of Chinese reflexive ziji. With respect to the reference of ziji, fruitful and important contributions have been drawn from previous studies from perspectives of syntax, semantics and pragmatics. But these studies are still confined to analyzing ziji from a theoretical perspective, and interpretation rules derived failed to fully account for the referential process of ziji. Therefore, in this paper, we attempt to explore the reference of ziji via empirical evidences, and to come up with an analysis which integrates theories with empirical data. The empirical results suggest that the semantic orientations of verbs, adverbs and adjectives perform important impact on the referential interpretation of ziji. On the basis of the empirical results, this paper adopted the framework of the Principle of Compositionality (Frege, 1879;Montague, 1970;Janssen & Partee, 1997, 2011) to generalize the semantic and syntactic operation rules which are necessary to account for the referential process of ziji.
