Abstract

Recently, history of the interaction between Qing and Chosŏn was flourishing in the field of East Asian cultural interaction because of the publication of Yŏnhaengrok providing a lot of valuable historical sources. Scholars in East Asia can utilize the sources by the new perspectives to farther more information to solve the pervious limitation in the academia. Besides the leaders of Yŏnhaengsa, the contribution on the interaction between China and Korea of the mission members, such as Yŏkkwan (Official Interpreters), cannot be ignored.

This article aims to study on the case of Kim Chi-nam(1654~1718) to identify how his works influenced the relationships between Qing China and Chosŏn Korea. He was appointed as the accompanying interpreter for the Mukedeng(1664~1735) mission of demarcation in the border between Chosŏn and Qing. In this duty, he was assigned to deal with the decision of the border with the Chinese officers. He was also demanded by the leaders of Yŏnhaengsa to collect some precious books during his duty in China. He also translated those books in Hangul to help the local officers to read it. Since he was promoted to be the head of ministry of interpretation because of his good records of the duty, he started to collect the information for the interpreters for editing T’ongmunkwanchi to help all of us to understand the details of the interaction between Qing and Chosŏn. It can be found that, Kim Chi-nam was the good case to understand how Interpreters were significant for the historical relationships between China and Korea in Qing period.

Therefore, this article will try to investigate the documents which has already published or unpublished Chinese and Korean documents, such as T’ongmunkwanchi, Yŏkkwansangŏn dŭngrok, Pukchŏngrok, Sinchŏnchasapang...etc. to grasp the knowledge about the role of Kim Chi-nam and other Chosŏn interpreters in the Kangxi period by the theory of translation studies and East Asian cultural interaction to re-understand the agent role of Chosŏn interpreters.
