Abstract
This article examines postverbal locative prepositional phrases (PP) in Hainan Min. We argue that this syntactic behavior, rarely attested in Sinitic languages, is induced by contact with the Kra-Dai languages, specifically the model languages Be and Hlai, both of which have an inherent word order of [VP-PP]. This word order change serves as an example of “contact-induced word order change without word order change” as proposed by Heine (2008). The differences in syntactic constraints observed in different dialects demonstrate that the inherent linguistic features of the recipient language act as a “filter” during the process of syntactic transfer.
