Biography

Dr. PL Chan received his Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Biochemistry and Master of Philosophy in Microbiology from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He then pursued his interests in influenza and immune cell biology research and obtained his doctorate in immunology from the University of Hong Kong. Dr. Chan continued his research at the University of Hong Kong before joining the School of Science and Technology of the Open University of Hong Kong in 2015 as a teaching assistant. He then moved to the position of lecturer and assistant professor. He assumed the role of assistant professor at the School of Nursing and Health Studies in 2022 and returned to the School of Science and Technology in 2024.

His current research interest is in microbial ecology, particularly antibiotics and pollutants' effect on the microbiome and resistome in food, compost, soil, and aquatic environments. He is also interested in the immunology of inflammatory bowel diseases and the immunotoxicity of pollutants of emerging concern.

Besides research, Dr. Chan also enjoys teaching and is concerned about students' morals and values in education. He has earned a Master of Arts in Ethics and Public Affairs with Distinction from the Hong Kong Baptist University.
