Biography
Prof. Gary Tse grew up in Kent, UK. In 2005, he matriculated at Trinity Hall, University of Cambridge to read pre-clinical medicine under the Medical and Veterinary Sciences Tripos, completing a Part II in Physiology and Neuroscience. Whilst at Cambridge, he was awarded Bachelor, Master, and two Doctoral degrees in 2008, 2012, 2015 and 2022, respectively. He joined HKMU in 2022. He is dually qualified in public health and pharmaceutical medicine from the UK under the Faculties of Public Health and Pharmaceutical Medicine, and is a medical examiner accredited by the UK's Royal College of Pathologists. He is also a registered medical laboratory technologist in Hong Kong and a chartered scientist recognised by the UK's Science Council.
Prior to joining HKMU, Prof. Tse held a joint position as Clinical Reader in Public Health Medicine at the University of Kent appointed to the retirement age and Public Health Consultant at the Medway Council in local government. He served as Professor at the Department of Cardiology and Principal Investigator at the Tianjin Institute of Cardiology, Second Hospital of Tianjin Medical University. He is a Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Surrey, and an Honorary Associate Professor at the School of Pharmacy, UCL.
In recognition of his research and professional practice, he received Fellowships of the Institute of Biomedical Science (2016), European Society of Cardiology (2016), American College of Cardiology (2017), Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (2019), Heart Rhythm Society (2018), Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (Fellowship qua Physician) (2017), Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (2018), Royal College of Physicians of London (2019), Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (2019), Faculty of Public Health (UK) (2019), Royal College of Pathologists (2022) and Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (2023). In recognition of teaching excellence and innovations, he was awarded, successively, Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Educators (UK) in 2018 and Senior Fellowship of the UK Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) in 2024.
He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of Expert Opinion on Pharmacotherapy and has been appointed a member of the Technical Advisory Group on Diabetes of the World Health Organization and a member of New Technologies Expert Group, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine, Royal Colleges of Physicians of the UK. He is the President-Elect of the International Society of Electrocardiology, a member of the Board of Trustees of the International Society for Noninvasive Electrocardiology (ISHNE), a Nucleus Committee member of the Population Health Section, European Association of Preventive Cardiology of the European Society of Cardiology, for which he is the Deputy Representative for the Accreditation and Certification Committees, and a member of the Core Steering Committee of the International Cardiovascular and Respiratory Alliance.
He is on the editorial board of >10 international journals, serves as an expert reviewer for >50 international journals in cardiology, cardiac electrophysiology, cardiovascular biology and epidemiology and reviews for six grant bodies from New Zealand, Poland, Sweden and the UK. He has an H-index of 74. His research is internationally recognised and he is top 0.05% scholars in Medicine and Cardiology (ScholarGPS, 2024: #3354 out of 30 million scholars, Medicine: #493 and Cardiology: #87), top 2% scientists (Stanford University), top 3 cardiology researcher in China (AD Scientific Index) and Expertscape Top expert in 2025. He is also Top 100 Cardiovascular Researcher in China since 2022 and most recently has been placed, as 1 of 63 researchers from the field of Cardiology and Cardiovascular System, on the 100,000 Elite Ranking List 2026 by Global Author ID. He was elected to the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2024 (Class II: Medicine).
