Danny Leung obtained his B.A., M.Phil and Ph.D. in Applied English Linguistics from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he also served as Director of the M.A. programme in Applied English Linguistics prior to joining OUHK. He is currently Head of Applied Language Studies and Deputy Director of Research Institute for Bilingual Learning and Teaching (RIBiLT). He is the programme leader of the full-time Bachelor of English Language Studies with Honours programme (JUPAS code: 9540) and Bachelor of Bilingual Communication and Global Business with Honours programme (JUPAS code: 9570). He is also the programme coordinator of the part-time distance learning English Language Studies suite of programmes.
Danny Leung’s research interests mainly lie in the area of applied cognitive linguistics, with a specific focus on metaphor and metonymy theories and second language figurative language acquisition. He has published a number of book chapters on cross-linguistic analysis of idioms and on second language figurative language pedagogy. Danny is also enthusiastic about enhancing the English proficiency of the general public in Hong Kong. He served as language consultant and guest host in the English language TV programme ‘English Made Easy 反斗英語’ produced by RTHK. He was the guest host in two RTHK English learning radio programmes and was invited by OUP and CSTDI as guest speaker in a number of English writing and pronunciation seminars and workshops. Danny has also been invited by secondary schools and tertiary institutions to deliver English language learning talks.
Danny Leung’s teaching has been recognized by having been awarded President’s Awards for Teaching Excellence 2019 (OUHK), the Faculty of Arts Outstanding Teaching Award 2012 (CUHK), and Department of English Exemplary Teaching Award 2012 (CUHK).
